Are All The Pious Shaykhs Salafis ?

ro     hi  -
Alhamdulillah wasslaato wassalaam ala RasoolAllah..

Lets ask this question directly to Shaykh Saleh al Munajjid, a salafi scholar himself:

Shaykh Saleh al Munajjid while teaching the way of salaf says,

"... But… this does not mean that all the pious shaykhs are Salafis or that all the Salafis are pious and that others are not pious. No, this is not the case.

Piety (taqwa) means doing that which Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) have enjoined and forsaking that which Allaah and His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) have forbidden. Everyone who obeys Allaah and avoids disobeying Him is following light from Allaah and is pious. Everyone who disobeys Allaah is falling short in piety to the extent of his disobedience or sin.

If this is what piety means, then it cannot be attained simply by calling oneself a Salafi or anything else, or joining any of the groups. Rather the more one attains of the causes of piety – such as learning about Allaah and His laws and acting upon them – the greater share one will have of piety and the higher his status will be in Islam.

Just as it is essential to differentiate between Islam and what the Muslims do, it is also essential to differentiate between the Salafi manhaj (way) and the Salafis.

The conclusion of this fatawa is that their is nothing such that your teacher should be someone who calls himself a salafi. Rather if someone doesnot calls himself a salafi then too he can be a pious teacher because action is important and not the name. On the day of Judgement we will be judged for doing that which Allaah and His Messenger ﷺ have enjoined and forsaking that which Allaah and His Messenger ﷺ have forbidden and not on naming ourselves.

We have opinion of another scholar and Muhaddith, Shaykh Zubair Ali Zai, who holds quite the same opinion as discussed above.

Shaykh Zubair Ali Zai while explaning a hadith, says:

"In this context, a lecture of Dr. Farhat Hashmi on the topic "Ar Rijalu Qawwamuna Alan Nisayi" is very beneficial which is available on the market in the form of Cassette".

Mahnama al Hadith Hazro by Shaykh Zubair Ali Zai, volume-50, page -13.

Now, as we must be aware that Dr. Farhat Hashmi doesnot prefer to call herself a salafi, She prefers to call herself a Muslim only and yet Shaykh Zubair Ali Zai praises her and gives advice to take knowledge from her.

Their is one more (salafi) scholar whose name is Shaykh Asim Al Hakeem. A person questions him whether to listen tafseer of Dr. Farhat Hashmi or not.
He answers that if she doesn't have serious mistakes in her lecture, then there is no problem taking knowledge from her.

Here, the shaykh doesnot adviced that because she doesnot calls herself a salafi so donot take knowledge from her.

This was the way earlier too. Abu Bakr, Umar, Usman, Ali, Hasan al-Basri r.h. , Ata ibn Abi Rabah r.h. , Imam Abu Haneefah, Imam Shafi, Imam Ahmad, Imam Malik, Imam Tabari, Imam Bukhari Imam Muslim, Imam Tirmidhi, Imam ibn Hajr asqalani, Imam Nawawi, Imam ibn Kaseer, these all are amongst great teachers and they never called themself a salafi. They all are teachers of ours and even of salafi brothers and we all learn Deen from them. When we donot object taking Deen from them, then why we object taking knowledge from those who do not call themselves as salafi. Some can object that it may be because ealier they didn't have groups and today we have so many groups but this is not correct as groups are there since the era of the companions of the prophet and khawarij are the examples as mentioned in Bukhari and Muslim.
